プログラミング本ほかの売却メモ


専門書を高値で買取してくれるVALUE BOOKSのチラシを見て、ジョブチェンジで不要となったプログラミング本を売却してみることにしました。

今回、新しいものから古いものまでを売却してみたので、そのメモをします。

まずステップとしては、
  1. 電話する
  2. 身分証明書コピーと銀行振り込み先などの記載用紙をダンボールに入れる
  3. 集配に来たクロネコヤマト配送員に手渡し
  4. 査定金額がメールで来る
  5. OKして振込を待つ
くらいでした。電話する際にダンボールの個数をいう必要があるので、詰めてから電話するのがよいでしょう。査定結果の通知はスキップすることができますが、最初は信頼していませんので念の為に通知をお願いしました。もともと捨てるつもりの本だったのでOK前提ですが、お断りした場合の返送は"すべて一括の返送は無料"とのこと。一冊一冊個別の返送は費用がかかるようなので、査定金額を気にする場合は小さいダンボールで複数便に分けて査定をお願いするのがよいでしょう。

日曜日に出して火曜日に査定の連絡がメールで来ました。15冊で3,600円。古い本も入っていたので、意外と高値で引き取ってもらえたように思います。ただ最新本は高値査定ということだったので、できれば一冊ごとの金額を提示していただけるとより納得感があったかなと思いました。

大学ランキング

アメリカに来てから大学見学が面白くなってきて、近くに行けば一周して見て周っています。
大学の規模が非常に大きいことに加えて、建物がユニークだったり(でも最近はこぞってスペイン風建築が多い)、山があったり、学生の特徴(特にリベラル度、見た感じのヒッピー度)が違ったりします。

で、先日、山登りの帰りにカリフォルニア州立大学フレズノを偶然通りかかりました。どうも大学の外郭に駐車場があり、そこから歩かなければ内部に入れないようで、既に夕方だったので車で一周しました。通行止めになっている道路があり、どうやら大学を拡張工事しているもようでした。大学の外には農場が広がり、たくさんの羊が飼われていました。あと、スポーツが盛んなのか、野球をしていました。

そんな話をある二人にしたら、二人とも写真を見るや「これ、どこ?」と興味があったわりに、どこの大学だかわかると「どうしてそんなところへ?」「小さい大学だ」「明らかに農業の大学だ」などと珍しく釣れない言葉。
まぁトップにいれば小さく見えてしまう気持ちはわかりますが、それなりに名前は知られているんじゃないかなぁ(オダギリジョーとか)と思って、大学のランキングを見てみました。


すると面白い。

どういう項目でチェックしているのか見てませんし、上位にアメリカ及びイギリスの大学が並ぶのは知名度や歴史や英語圏であることから順当だとしても、

東大(19位)と京大(25位)がかなり上位。

次は阪大(44位)。

アメリカ→イギリス→オーストラリアに次いで、四番目の国。学術では英語が有利なことを肌身で感じていますので、これはかなり良い成績ではないかと。

高校の時くらいかに「日本の大学のトップでさえ、世界で300番台だ」なんて聴いた記憶があります。その真偽はさておき、現在の日本の大学はかなり検討しているんですね。

それと、割と中国の大学のランキングが高くないことが目に留まりました。最高で北京大学の50位。
人口の多い国なのでそんなことはないと思うのですが、優秀な人が国外に出ちゃうからなのでしょうか。
(Beijin Universityではなくて、Peking Universityらしい。あと、ウェブページがリダイレクトされ続けて見られない。)

残念ながら僕が卒業した大学はまだ発見できていません(^^; それぞれ普通ではない良さがありましたが、それらはランキングとしては評価されないでしょう。

Journal? or Diary?

I didn't know the difference between journal and diary.

My tutor told me:
  • Journal is for guys.
  • Diary is for girls.


I guess most native Japanese don't know this like me.


However kind lang-8 users clarified more. They said
  • Journal is just a more sophisticated diary.
  • Diary is a kind of a personal record for the writer to read.
  • Journal is a kind of what is written for other people to read.

I thank them for the meanings.

単語の覚え方

以前ある事情で似たようなアプリケーションを作るお手伝いしていたのですが、上手い具合にFlashで利用できるようにしたサイトを知ったので使ってみました。実はなかなか英単語が頭に定着しないので、また作ろうかと思っていたところ。

もし自分が作るとすればネックになるだろうと思っていた発音も収録済みなので、なかなかよいかも。(むしろ、作る時間がなくなってきたのが現実…)

覚える範囲が広いのと予想以上にお試しコースが覚える前に終了してしまったことから1000円払うかどうか躊躇っています(^^;

"furlough (一時解雇/帰休)"

今日は夜の英語の授業に今年初めて出席してきました。
上級クラスは「英語はペラペラだけどちょっと(何かが足りないんだ)…」という生徒の集まりでした。秋学期は頑張ったけれど私はいっぱいいっぱいだったので、顔見知りで親切な先生の中級クラスに籍を移しました。

クラスのレベルは適切な気がするので、テンパらずに学習していけそうです。


ところで授業の中で男性が"furlough"という単語を連発し、先生がそれをトピックに取り上げました。全く知らなかったのですが「一時解雇」の意味。わざわざ先生が綴りを書いてくれました。

住んでいる地域は比較的富裕層が多いのですが、不況の波がついに来たか…といったという気がしました。

富裕層が多いといっても生活は様々ですし、移民も多い地域ですので、一様には語れません。しかし友人の帰国に次いで二つ目に実感した変化で、少し授業が上の空になってしまっていました。

Scary English Lesson - Jan 22nd 2009 12:22

Today I tried to attend an English class. The class is about vocabulariy and pronunciation, and is held at the International Center of my university once a week. I went today for the first time.

I don't know why, but the teacher strongly said to everyone that "This class is an advanced class of the university that has many foreign students. Beginners have to go to town schools."

There were Asians (Chinese, Korean, and Japanese), a European, and a South American (maybe). Everyone except for me could speak English very well and could understand the teacher's English. Honestly, it was so hard for me to keep up with her. I had to work my brain very, very hard.

Suddenly she asked a Japanese lady a question. Though it was a trivial question and I forget what it was, the student couldn't understand it. Then the teacher got angry, and said that they had to talk about classes held outside of the university after this class. What awful words she said!

The student was ashamed, got angry, and left the room. I sympathize with her... However, the teacher seemed to reflect on herself a little bit after that.

I also had difficulty understanding English because the teacher forbid students to use their dictionaries. Because it was she that had forbidden dictionaries, I asked her everything I couldn't understand. A French guy helped me, but the teacher answered my questions to help me understand. I thought she must have regretted what she said to the lady earlier...

I think the class is definitely an advanced one, and the teacher must be a professional. Even though it was hard for me, the level might have been adequate for me. I guess nobody could enjoy it, though. I want to learn English while enjoying it. I am wondering if I should stop attending the class.

Unfortunately, I don't have any contact information for the Japanese student who left the class. I hope she doesn't stop learning English.

Additionally, I wonder if Japanese lessons are also so scary and awful, or not.

Joined SNS Lang-8

I knew SNS Lang-8 through my friend's blog. Lang-8 is a place where someone posts a message in their non-native language, and then other native people correct the message.

When I registered myself, I found out that the site is great! Immediately I corrected a message posted in Nihongo by perhaps a Chinese user. Lang-8 has a special user interface to modify other user's messages as a comment. It's different from usual blog sites.

I have used this blog site to practice writing English. But Lang-8 seems more proper than Blogger. However I wouldn't like to migrate over to Lang-8 completely and discard this site...

It might be the best for me to maintain the both sites... Fortunately it has a function to refer to other blog sites. I modify my setting in Lang-8 as this blog can be referred by my profile page in Lang-8.

Advanced Study of Statistics 3

I've read the book:
Manga De Wakaru Statistics for Regression Analysis
(マンガでわかる統計学 回帰分析編)

This book is the 2nd one in its series. The story is that a girl fall in love with the boy who does not know the existence of the girl. The girl tries to study the regression analysis with the book which he forgot to make him be aware of herself.

The book tells us the 2 methods of statistics:

  • Regression analysis

  • Multiple regression analysis



Each function is difficult to calculate data. The book introduces the detailed illustration and the easy way of them. Some of the most difficult points are omitted with author's comments.

In the regression analysis, we will learn the least-square method to approximate data. It will be very useful when we try to get data of the program performance and the program memory status with parameters.

So I could know regression analysis with fun by this book. Of course it is not necessary to say the ending of the story, I think.

Impression of an English Conversation School

Last Saturday, I joined the English conversation school held near my apartment. Although it was the first time for me to go, as a result, I had a good impression , and I decided to go to there next week. Today I'd like to write the situation, what is done, and my feelings.

The number of classes which I participated at was two. One was the beginner class, and another was for middle level speakers. The latter was provided me with by favor of the school staff. However, the middle level class was canceled because all of students were absent because of their inconvenience. So I could have a long talking time with the teacher.

First, I'd like to write people in class. There were 8 persons in the classes. One teacher and 7 students met.

The teacher is, of course, a foreigner. He is from Washington State of US as a missionary. He was very kind due to his vocation but also active and very normal as a contemporary person. He liked sports, especially soccer and baseball, so that talking about them has seemed to run high.

Students varied. 4 men and 3 women joined. Their works were also different from each other. Although I wondered where students in the beginner class had spoken English, they could use English better than I. It was wonderful, and I doubted if I could be in the beginner time or not. I had to make myself sensitive and careful.

In the middle level class, it was started by introducing what students did on last weekend and in the week. Students were allowed to talk about what they liked in turn. While the talk, the teacher asked speakers many things to make them broadened. I admired his lecture skill. He pulled out English sentences and words from students by turns very well. It was also amazing that all of students spoke much frequently! I wondered if this class is for beginners, or not. This was due to the teacher. It seemed too hard that true beginners joined. I really enjoyed talks because other Japanese students used many words which were easily understood by me, and some of them had been forgotten and were remembered at that time. After talking, we practiced listening with a book. This was a trivial lesson. However I thought that I could know tips such as difference between 'meet' and 'see' because the teacher was a native speaker. And finally we had the Bible time.

Actually I was upset because I am not a Cristian and had not heard that such the time existed. It was natural because I was in a church and the teacher was a missionary. So I thought that it was a good opportunity to know the Bible and that I should better study not only English but also the Cristian thought and culture. In the world I could not understand sentences in the bible well, but the missionary explained it very politely so that I felt that it was beautiful and divine.

So I enjoyed the beginner class totally and I decided to participate in it. After the class I had the time to speak with the teacher for a hour instead of the middle level class. I wonder if I can join the upper class because the beginner class has been suitable for me and I has not experienced the level. There is uneasy element, but it must also be a good opportunity to speak English for a long time in Japan.

Advanced Study of Stastics 2

Somedays ago I introduced "Manga de Wakaru the Statistics/マンガでわかる統計学".
Recently I've completed reading the 3rd book of "Manga de Wakaru the Statistics (for the factor analysis)/マンガでわかる統計学 因子分析編".

This book introduces the pricipal component analysis and the factor analysis in the Statistics with the story of a girl. With her effort and love to Mr.Yamamoto, readers can understand the knowledge easily.

The book totally seems to be fun, but there are some hard point. Especially calculation is very complexed. But the author allow us to skip some of them. Although It isn't difficult to master the skill with once read, you can read it again and again without being tired. Then you will know the essence of the pricipal component analysis and the factor analysis!!

By the way, The book is the 3rd one. In the book, Rui-chan could see Mr.Yamamoto successfully. But it was also thanks to Mrs. Igarashi. The 2nd book is the story of Mrs. Igarashi. I'm looking forward to reading it and learning the regression analysis method!

Advanced Study of Statistics

Nowadays I utilize statistics in my work to gather and analyze the mass data of program which goes an incomprehensible explanation. But I have no experiences about Statistics, so I've looked for good teaching materials.

Some days ago, I found the good one. That is...



"Manga de Wakaru Toukeigaku / マンガでわかる統計学"

Immediately, I bought it :)

I've started reading it since yesterday, I find out that the book is very very suited to the beginner of statistics, for example, not also high school students but me. It's so much understandable and practical, I think.

In Nihon, there is the same kind of books like it in several field. And they are recently very popular. If you have interests, please don't hesitate to try them. It's very fun!
(But my wife looks at me with suspicious.)


I also like Kodera-san's books about the differential and integral calculus and the linear algebra. They helped me a lot when I was in the undergraduate.
